This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

Ms. Rhodes from Landover MD is requesting supplies through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need these items to create a Sensory Slime compound by mixing the starch, glue, water colors and glitter. This is a STEM-project for young Spec. Ed. students.

The key to learning for me, is the excitement. That first intake of breath followed by a "wow!" or an "oooh..." That excitement, and sense of wonder is what I would like to bring to my students, while we use a multidisciplinary approach in learning how to make and ways to use this VERY cool Slime.
My students are between 5 and 8 years old and they have moderate to severe cognitive disabilities paired with/or a result of additional disabilities such as Downes Syndrome and autism.
The classroom is part of self contained special education program within our elementary school. The program is designed to provide access to the state curriculum with an adapted, hands-on, real world approach to learning. Students' cognitive levels and abilities vary widely, so it is important to design lessons that reach all learners, using the learning modalities that they learn from best. My students learn best when they don't even realize they are learning. That is why this project is so important to me as a teacher. I will not only be teaching science but also math (measurement), reading (following directions, sequencing), as well as a number of core concepts such as color identification, 5 senses, opposites etc. and these don't include what stu.s will learn as they play with the compound.
My students learn best using real world hands on techniques and this project would enable them to take part in all levels. From going online and choosing the Slime recipe and color, to measuring, mixing and kneading the ingredients to choosing and adding the additional items into the separate Slime blobs. Initially there will be 2 theme buckets of Slime and 2 Slime bottles. Beginning with spring and ocean themed Slimes that will have spring-type items and water creatures respectively added to the compound. Students will also be able make number and letter Slime where they will pull out letters and spell words or numbers to add or identify. Students will complete a sequencing activity detailing the steps to make the slime and go home with either a bag of slime or a sealed slime-filled bottle. Hopefully this will encourage parents to talk with their child about how it was created and perhaps make some together.
Donations to this project would improve my classroom by helping students learn in a fun and different way which will really help them during Independent Centers (when they must work independently for :10.
This is a challenge for a number of students). The Slime bottles will be useful when working with kids who still put non-food items in their mouths. And the bottles also help calm stu.s while they watch the fluids and glitter etc, settle inside the bottle. All students will GREATLY benefit.
