Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am an RSP teacher in a school in an elementary school in San Jose. The neighborhood is a low socio-economic area with the majority of students qualifying for free school lunch. Many of our students are English Language Learners.
For the most part, our students come to school excited and eager to learn, and the culture of the school is one of "happy learners." My students are in grades transitional kindergarten through 6th grade and have a variety of disabilities including autism and Specific Learning Disabilities.
Their needs are many but we are excited, as are they, to see them making progress. Progress is a struggle but so precious when those gains are made.
My students are in general education but come to my classroom for help with reading, writing and math.
My Project
Most of my students have language impairments or autism and many struggle with reading comprehension. I like to think when my students come to my RSP classroom that they experience a different way of learning, one that is really fun. This is why we are asking for The Comprehension Library and some other tools we can use to promote comprehension such as prefix and suffix tiles and grammar bingo.
My biggest struggle is not how to teach them to read the words on the page but how to understand what those words mean.
I hope these games will go a long way to help with the process. When I try to teach them about suffixes and prefixes it can be boring to say the least, however when I get out a game the excitement is palpable. These games help students learn about context clues, affixes, vocabulary, inferences, main idea, and reading for information.
