My students are English Language Learners. Some of the countries they come from are Mexico, Korea, China, Brazil, Sri Lanka, Ukraine and Kuwait. They speak Spanish, Korean, Mandarin, Ukranian, Portugese, and Farsi.
They are an amazing group of students with a strong work ethic, wonderful attitudes, and a strong desire to learn the English language.
They love to learn about different countries. They share their unique cultures with the class and they love to learn about customs in the United States as well. They love geography and want to look at the world map daily. I enjoy working with these kids every day and feel privileged to be part of their lives.
My Project
I reference the world map several times during the day with my English Language Learners. My students, kindergarten thru fifth grade, represent 10 different countries all over the world. They are familiar with the world map and much of my curriculum instruction focuses on geography, locations, and map vocabulary.
With a rolling chalk board, I can mount my very large world map in a centrally located location in my class and use it daily.
I have no wall space large enough to keep this map up all the time. Students will be able to use this map daily to learn map skills and to practice oral language using new vocabulary. With the use of this very important visual aide, students will be able to get a better understanding of their world.
