Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Can you imagine the joy in learning about someone you look up to and then being given the chance to dress-up and pretend to be that person? This is exactly the experience I hope to give my 24 Kindergarten students. This is exactly the experience our classroom needs your help to afford.
My students are 95% English Language Learners, and most receive free-and-reduced lunches because their families are living in poverty.
Several of my students come from families with parents who are not literate and have limited education. For many, Kindergarten has been their first true experience with hearing about careers that involve going to college. It is my goal (in KINDERGARTEN) to inspire children through literature, play-based learning, and investigation of careers to believe that they can and will attend college!
My Project
These costumes are realistic and sturdy representations of what many professionals wear. Students will be able to pretend to be a nurse, construction worker, doctor, police officer, veterinarian, firefighter, chef, mail carrier, astronaut, pilot, and news caster. I will ensure that play is not racially or gender biased- children will be encouraged to pretend to be any person of their own interest!
So often schools forget about the power of pretend play.
Even in kindergarten, the drive to meet state standards and improve test scores has many teachers throwing out hands-on learning experiences and replacing them with more pencil-work and worksheets. I want my students to have rich oral language and pretend experiences that enhance their understanding of what we study (community helpers) and inspire them to really make a difference when they grow up- however they define that for themselves.
