Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach at Green Oaks Academy, a public school in the Ravenswood City School District. Green Oaks Academy has 450 students ranging from kindergarten through third grade. The ethnic make-up of the population is 88%Latino, 5% African American, 1% Pacific Islanders, and 2% other. 91% of the students are from low-income families and qualify for the free lunch program. 93% of the students are English Language Learners. Our principal just informed us that we do not have enough money for any field trips this year. All 4 kindergarten classes (80 students) were looking forward to our annual field trip. We have not been on a single field trip this school year. This will be a great experience for all the children to learn and visit the zoo. We are already teaching a Zoo Thematic Unit but it would be great for them to actually pet the animals. Children really do learn through hands-on experience. We need funds for transportation and admission tickets. This will cover 80 students for 4 kindergarten classes. Please help us!!! This is an inner city school and the parents do not have money to help fund this field trip. Our children are our future. We must expose them to endless possibilities, so they can strive for the best in life. Thank you.
