Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Hello! I’m a first-year Pre-K teacher. My school is beautifully diverse, where each classroom contains English Language Learners and refugees. I’ve adopted Conscious Discipline as my classroom management plan. Essentially, Conscious Discipline is an understanding that a child’s needs have to be met before learning happens. These needs are split into 3 states: Survival (Am I safe?), emotional (Am I loved?), and executive (what can I learn from this?). In the area that I work in, the student home life is not always ideal. I understand that some of my students might be coming in hungry, or maybe didn’t have a home to sleep in the night before, etc. It is my mission to fulfill all of their needs in order to gain trust, love, and a sense of safety in my classroom. I would love to create a loving, safe, and enriching environment in my room.
My Project
Centers are full of self-discovery. This is the time that children can take the time to explore what they’re interested in. Since each center should be stocked with different kinds of materials, the children can determine what they like and don’t like. They’re practicing and exploring many important concepts in a safe environment. I also would like for my students to have more creative center materials, letter building, interesting science observations, and math manipulatives.
My classroom has English Language Learners, as well as refugees.
So, as a new Pre-K teacher, I am seeking to further improve my centers in order to create a more engaging, hands-on learning experience. This is especially important for not only early childhood but for those who are new to the language/country.
