My 9 and 10-year-old fourth-graders are very outgoing and curious students. They come from many different cultures and various incomes. I work with my students daily to help build community and understanding towards their classmates, no matter our differences.
Each student in our community of learners has their own needs when it comes to learning.
They come to school each day ready to learn and to engage and collaborate with their classmates. This active bunch of boys and girls needs to be able to choose the best spot in the classroom to keep calm, focused, and productive. I continue to find solutions to help make learning fun.
Do you remember sitting in rows in a traditional classroom? Young children need to wiggle and move...a lot! Traditional classrooms are not set up for today's students who need to move around the classroom. Flexible seating allows students to wiggle, rock, bounce, lean, or stand, making learning fun and engaging!
Dynamic classrooms of today are incorporating flexible seating, allowing students the freedom to choose the best seating arrangements that will help him or her to engage and focus on their work.
Comfortable students are engaged students.
In my classroom, I continue to add seating choices and areas for the students to choose where they work. I have added a rug, three standing desks, T-stools, a yoga ball, and separate work areas. By adding these 4 adjustable wobble chairs and 4 portable writing surfaces my students will be given more control and choice over their learning environment. They will also be able to quickly and easily move to work in pairs, with a group, or as a whole class discussion. These seats will continue to enhance the flexible seating I strive to include in my classroom. Adding more choices for seating will help make a place that my students really enjoy.
