Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is a K-1 school and the majority of our students are considered at-risk, hi poverty. We have a high percentage of English Language Learners. Schools that have students that take the Star Test, 2nd grade and up, are eligible to receive QEIA funds. Since we are K-1 only, we do not receive these funds and resources and materials are more limited to us than to many other schools.
Writing is something that many students struggle with. Good writing skills start early and are most important in the lower grades while young minds are still developing. Writing is an even greater challenge for students who are English Language Learners.
Getting my students to write, whole class, is like pulling teeth. My students need a space where they can go and focus in a place that is quieter than the rest of the room, somewhere to concentrate or receive help in a smaller group.
Life would be a dream if my students could have a place to work within the classroom to receive help in a small group. At our school, there is simply no more desks or tables available to put in my room to create such a space. Our enrollment keeps increasing and our resources/furniture keeps getting spread thinner. I need to be able to find a way to work with students who are in high need, away from the rest of the class while the rest of the class is working on another assignment or project. Please help me help my students.
