Help me give my students a complete series of Dogman by Dav Pilkey. My English language learners and special education students love graphic novels and become motivated readers when their favorite series are available.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students love book series and they all have their favorite book characters. Don't you recall your favorite book characters and
the anticipation and excitement you felt waiting for and then finally reading the anticipated next installment in your favorite series?
My students share that excitement and joy of waiting for and then finally devouring the newest books in their favorite series.
When my students begin to refer to the book characters by first names then I know they are hooked!
Discussing what their favorite characters are doing and making text to self connections for my struggling readers helps them want to push through books that may be challenging at first.
They do this because they feel a connection to the series they chose to read.
These books have repeating characters so students can follow them in all kinds of adventures across the series. They vary in complexity to support all students at their individual levels from graphic novels to novels.
Students can select which character they want to go on an adventure with and read through that series. Then they can begin to branch out and get acquainted with new characters and begin a new reading journey.
My Project
Every student book that is placed in our library is treated with love and care, and they are thankful for the opportunities to read. All of these books have been chosen with my students in mind-I have watched them the past few weeks of school read titles just like these.
Students will be able to choose books, which will help them continue to enjoy independent reading time.
They will be able to enjoy their favorite series without having to wait for two weeks while the one copy of the book makes the rounds. Having these books available will help keep the reading momentum going.
