I teach in a PreK-8 school in a lower income city in New York State. Our school provides 100% free breakfast and lunch to my students. Many of my students live in temporary housing and shop at the local food kitchen for their essentials. Working in a low-income city does not mean low standards. As teachers, we are expected to provide rigorous standard-based academics that need to be differentiated to meet the needs of all of the learning styles of our students.
All of my students have an IEP with very different goals that I need to meet, along with staying on course with the Common Core learning standards.
These students struggle with reading, writing, mathematics, social studies, science, and social skills. One of the best alternative ways to meet my students' needs and still motivate them to want to learn is to teach with alternative methods, hands-on projects and the use of technology where they can learn using many modes of intelligence.
My Project
The students come from low-income households, where many of the students are left home alone with little interaction of peers and adults. This gives these students a disadvantage on learning how to positively interact with those around them. My students need a basic dry erase kidney table so they can work in small groups. I work with students in special education who need help learning how to work together.
By donating to this project, you are helping my students learn how to work in cooperative groups and motivate them by allowing them to draw on the table.
Working with special needs students, an area that they struggle with is learning how to share idea and add onto each other's thoughts. Having a dry erase surface big enough for a group to work with will allow students to not one speak in a group, but also cooperatively work on writing together.
This table will allow my students their own space to create something independently and then add it to a group idea. Please help my students learn how to confidently work together and feel accomplished as a team, a class and a family.
