Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
During recess, I recently I saw my students huddled around a praying mantis. They were asking questions and making observations. Several of them had never seen one before. Listening to them, it was so clear that my students are ready to learn about insects, spiders, and scorpions.
I have the honor and privilege of teaching 20 of the most energetic and fun-loving kindergarten students I have ever known.
They are natural scientists--filled with so many questions and observations about the world around them. Our school district is very small (consisting of only two schools) and funds are lacking. The children come from homes where their parents work hard to make ends meet. Many of my students are learning to speak English, with Spanish and Punjabi being their first language.
My Project
Real insects, spiders, and a scorpion permanently encased in Lucite will allow the kids to safely hold and observe these creatures up-close. Five-year-old hands can hold the clear Lucite blocks with ease, as they count legs, label appendages, and examine wing structures. In addition, x-ray insect cards will allow the children to find an insect of interest, hold the card up to a window or other light source, and see the inner structures with Superman-like vision. Finally, a collection of eight bug-related books will be a welcome companion to all the hands-on supplies. All of these items are sure to become class favorites and a welcomed addition to our science curriculum!
My students are ready to learn about bugs today!
They are prepared and waiting for the opportunity to learn more about insects, spiders, and scorpions. These resources will no doubt expand their minds. On behalf of my students, both present and future, I thank you for your kind consideration. The impact of your help will be felt for many years to come!
