My students all have intellectual disabilities that range in the severe to profound categories. Many are also impacted with physical disabilities, visual impairments and/or are deaf or hard of hearing impairments. I am providing my students with the opportunity to learn about jobs available in our community and the skills needed to perform various entry-level jobs. Skills will be taught in the school setting, then the students will demonstrate the ability to generalize their knowledge and ability to the community. The goal is to assist my students in reaching their goals.
They want to work in an integrated environment in their community and becoming an independent, contributing citizen.
COVID has had an enormous impact. My students are not able to train in the community; therefore, they cannot demonstrate the generalization of knowledge.
My Project
Our school recently adopted a new vocational training lab for grades 3-12+ linking to state standards through our standard connectors. We serve a variety of students with disabilities who have unique learning needs. This grant will fund the materials used to adapt the lab so all of our students will have access to the hands-on job and vocational skills training program.
The vocational training lab will need adaptations to assist in accessing curriculum for those with physical and learning impairments, as well as a variety of communication and literacy levels.
These adaptations may include but are not limited to adding forms of communication such as tactile supports for those with vision impairments, adding appropriate symbols to enhance receptive and expressive communication skills with the literature, such as providing real objects or real-life photos to accompany literary text. These adaptations are a function of best practices and research-supported methods of instruction when serving individuals with significant impairments.
These materials and adaptations will assist in the process of building student vocational skill sets and closing the gap between students with disabilities and their grade-level peers. In addition, because each student will have curriculum adapted to their needs, should a student or school need to move to distance learning materials could be sent home, ready and adapted to continue educational services and learning.
