Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a K-3 public school in San Jose, CA. Nearly all of my students come from low income families. They come to school, not only to learn, but to find friends and love from those around them.
All my students strive to be their best, and to give their all each and every day.
It is my second year at our school and I was fortunate enough to move grade levels and teach some of my same students for the second year in a row. They always do the most they can to be their best for me and I strive to do the same for them.
My Project
With all the screens and audio available to children, they have more opportunities than most these days. However, this means that children are spending less time cracking open a good book. I am asking for many titles that will engage my students in and encourage a love for reading: titles such as Harry Potter, Captain Underpants, and more!
When I ask students who aren't reading at home why they're not, the main answer I receive is: "Well, Miss Z I just don't have any books there!".
This means that, for my students coming from low-income households, my classroom and our school library are the main source of books for them! Help me fill my library with fun, interesting titles that will have my students begging for just five more minutes of reading time. Maybe one of these titles will be a book they remember reading for the first time for the rest of their lives.
