Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school has decided to implement the Professional Learning Community model to drive our teaching and to increase our teachers' knowledge.
This coming school year will be my 8th year teaching 5th grade, and my second year at my current school site.
I am also working towards a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction. My school desires to create a Professional Learning Community, which I am also researching as part of my dissertation.
My Project
I am requesting a camera and books on PLCs and teacher learning. The camera will be used to record our grade level meetings and lessons selected for review at those meetings. Part of the PLC model is to learn from the practices of other teachers. Since we can't observe one another (we all teach at the same time), a camera will allow us to tape and critically analyze one another's practices.
The books I requested support teacher learning related to participation in a PLC and general teacher learning (theory & practice). Ultimately, students will benefit by being part of a school whose teachers use one another as resources to improve their own practices and who take responsibility for the learning of every student, not just the ones in their own classes.
This project will impact our students greatly.
When children have teachers who are constantly learning, they will see this practiced modeled and emulate it. Concurrently, they will have better teachers as a result of the work done in the PLC. As teachers take responsibility for the learning of all students at their school, students will learn more from those teachers.
