My students need hands-on phonics centers and learning stations, including the Phonics Center, Beginning Blends, and Word Family activities that they can use independently.
"Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children, play is serious learning. Play is really the work of childhood." Fred Rogers (aka Mr. Rogers) I want to make play an important part of learning to read!
My first grade students are just beginning their lifelong journey as readers.
I want to make it fun and exciting for them to explore phonics, the building blocks of words. Our school is in a high needs community, which means that money is not always there for manipulatives and enrichment activities to engage the students.
My Project
The hands-on phonics Centers, Puzzles, Games, and Activity Centers that, I am requesting, would be available to use independently during small group learning center time. The students will have instant centers to 'play' with and use to learn how to manipulate letters, blends, and digraphs to create words and practice sounds.. The Roll-A-Word Dice Game and the Blend and Digraph Puzzles will be great items for when a student is finished with classwork and asks, "What can I do now?"
The phonics materials that I am requesting will help my students become engaged and in control in their independent learning.
Their play will be serious learning, it will be their work.
