My students need a variety of items including a sand and water table, stampers, and painters to meet their sensory needs as well as to encourage their creativity!
What would preschool be like without a variety of opportunities to explore materials in different ways? What if your sensory needs were too distracting & made it more difficult to process information or function in the classroom? What if we had materials to help expand student creativity?
Our developmental preschool programs enroll both typically developing students & students with special needs.
These students start their school careers in our classroom & are provided with many opportunities to learn from each other. Our school is located in one of the most ethnically diverse neighborhoods. Unfortunately it is also a school with a high number of students receiving free or reduced lunch. Our students have a variety of developmental needs in cognitive, social/emotional, motor, communication, and/or adaptive skill areas. All of them need support with learning how to be in school. All of them need a variety of materials to help enhance their interactions with each other & with classroom materials. The materials in this project will help our students start off the year with a diverse set of tools to use throughout the school year.
My Project
The one place that students get to delve into a table full of sand, water, or any material you can think of, is the sensory table! The different types of sand in this project will not only stimulate their visual sense but will also provide a tactile experience. That this experience could happen in a transportation themed table...now that is special! Some students (and sometimes adults) have difficulty with touching paint with their fingers & prefer using brushes. The flip flop painters will not only reinforce shape identification but will also give them the opportunity to use their hand to imprint the shapes on their art project. Providing yet another way to experience paint. The sensory regulating items in this project help our students focus. The stamps, peg a picture boards & Zingo game will provide literacy practice as well as visual, tactile, & auditory processing opportunities. The manipulative toys will provide the opportunity to tap into their creativity.
So much of learning involves manipulating items using our different senses.
Each time we use our senses to experience something we deepen our experience with that object. The materials in this project will provide opportunities to engage students in the classroom that includes a multi-sensory experience which in turn will increase their success in the classroom. You can be a part of this success when you donate to our project! Your donation will give all students a way to learn & experience.
