Playing With Light and Sound to Understand Waves

My Project

Science can be an intimidating subject. Help my 8th-grade special education students (SPED) learn science in a more approachable way by using familiar items. Flashlights and colored lasers help students witness light wave interactions (reflection, refraction, absorption, scattering, and refraction) through hands-on investigations. Tuning forks are effective tools to help students explore sound waves. Students discover for themselves the relationship between wavelength and frequency. They also determine how wavelength, frequency, and amplitude relate to pitch and volume. When students use a Slinky to demonstrate the formation of transverse and longitudinal waves, a simple toy becomes a powerful tool for learning.
