The students that I work with attend a high poverty school that serves children with disabilities in New York. I teach a self-contained 8:1:1 (8 students: 1 teacher: 1 paraprofessional) K-1st grade class. My students have a different diagnosis, such as Autism and intellectual disabilities. I work in one of the highest need areas in NY and all my students rely on our free meal program.
Each one of my students is unique and their academic levels, interests, behaviors and learning styles vary.
My Project
Playing language games at home with parents and siblings will help the students maintain the skills they learned in class and possibly develop new skills through learning.
Most of my students have difficulties expressing themselves verbally.
They need a lot of practice on skills they have learned. The games will motivate them to use what they know across more social settings.In addition, my students have difficulties with interaction. The games will support waiting, turn taking and attention.
These games will reinforce language and possibly extend beyond playing into real situations.
