My students are creative, curious people who thrive in an environment in which they can explore new materials and techniques. We have such a diverse group of students who hail from all over the world and some of the poorer parts of our first ring suburb. Many of them have fled poorly performing inner city schools for a chance to have better educational opportunities. The poverty level in our district has exceeded the majority and thus we have been awarded district wide free breakfast and lunch. My art classroom embodies the type of space in which many of these students find a refuge- a place where they can delve into a task that is challenging yet meaningful, and where the rewards are great.
My Project
Students in my sculpture class will be creating several projects that require professional finishing. Working with ceramics is a process that requires a lot of trial and error, and results are never the same. Much practice and testing is therefore required to gain the desired final project.
These glazes and clay tools will give students the confidence they need to take their creativity to the next level.
It is my hope that by having several more choices, my students' work can stand out as individual and they can take the spirit of experimentation and practice to all areas of their life.
