I am a speech-language pathologist who currently provides direct services to three low-incidence, 5-8th grade, special education classrooms, in two inner-city schools in Bridgeport, CT. Two of the classrooms are life skills/functional education programs and the third is a higher functioning autism classroom where students are mainstreamed with support.
My students are all special learners with a variety of needs who just want to fit in and be active members of the school community.
To actively engage my students with typical peers we are starting a unified sports team this year.
My Project
This year our school is going to start a unified sports basketball team to help integrate my special education students with the students in the general education. This will give my students the opportunity to develop new friendships while engaging in and being part of a sports team. It’s a win-win for everyone. The basketball supplies requested will allow us to practice and have uniforms in games. The materials will help my students be part of a real team. The basketballs and jerseys will be used in all practices and games. The whistle will help us run practices and the cinch sacks will allow the players to carry personal items to practices and games.
