Celebrating Black History Month

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

This is my 20th year as an educator. I started my career as a special education classroom teacher and have been working as a school social worker for the past 11, and yoga teacher for the past few years. I have the honor of supporting the needs of students, families, and staff at two schools on Staten Island. My schools are high poverty schools in New York City. All of our students receive free lunch. Ninety-seven percent of our student population is Black or Latino; many are first-generation Americans. Many of my students are transitioning from homelessness and or living in temporary housing. Many of my students have experienced a traumatic event that threatened their sense of physical security. Thirty percent of our students receive Special Education services. Despite the challenges they face daily, my students are sweet, silly, creative and talented beings. As an educator that practices mindfulness and yoga, I know the physical and mental benefits. I teach mindfulness and yoga to my students so they learn how to pay attention to the relationship between their mind and body. The yoga program that I facilitate offers students the opportunity to build strength, flexibility, balance and mental focus.

My Project

There are both physical and mental health benefits to students playing board games. Game playing induces laughter and reduces stress, boosting the immune system and lowering blood pressure. Board games help us escape from worries and focus on something else. They bring balance and help us relax. Help me provide interactive board game play time for my students during our afterschool program. These games will allow students the opportunity to improve awareness, consideration and respect: Through games, students will learn the impact their actions have on others. Students learn to truly listen to obtain information about others. The tone of voice gives indications about how a player's feeling, and body language gives micro-clues about their possible plays and strategy.
