I am a fifth grade teacher at a rural school that has a 44 percent free-lunch rate. Many of my students come from families who cannot help them with homework because the parents did not finish school themselves. These students struggle because they do not have the support they so desperately need. As a result, several of them do not do their homework, and they fail to understand basic math skills. It is my wish to help break this cycle and give my students basic comprehension in math so they will be successful in life. I want to do this through fun practice and practical application. I have found a set of math board games that I think will help my students. These games focus on specific math skills. After learning these skills, I will have my students play these games and I will observe them during play. I will take notes on which students need more practice with certain skills. Students will continue to practice those skills until the skills are mastered. This will help create a positive learning environment and will build confidence in my students. I know the students will enjoy playing games in math class, and I will enjoy watching them apply practical math skills. I truly believe that they will learn and retain their math skills this way. Any time math can be played while students are learning is a win-win situation! Please help fund this worthwhile project. Thank you!
