This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Every time I catch a whiff of the scent of Play-doh I get transported back to pleasant memories of my childhood. I want to provide my students with some of these memories.
Our school is in the heart of East Flatbush, Brooklyn, NY.
The school includes students from Pre-k to eighth grade, and it is a melting pot of descendants from the West Indies. The school is in a high poverty area, and about 95% of the students in the school receive free lunch. There are 18 energetic, three and four year old children in my class but there are not a lot of funds to enrich these students' education because of the budget cuts
My Project
We all know that play dough is fun and popular with young children, but apart from making a mess what is it really good for? Here are the fabulous benefits of allowing kids to play with play dough and the many learning opportunities that happen along the way!
The malleable properties of play dough make it fun for investigation and exploration as well as secretly building up strength in all the tiny hand muscles and tendons, making them ready for pencil and scissor control later on.
As part of simple, tactile play it can be squashed, squeezed, rolled, flattened, chopped, cut, scored, raked, punctured, poked and shredded! Each one of these different actions aids fine motor development in a different way, not to mention hand-eye co ordination and general concentration. And as soon as you add another element to it, the list of benefits and creative play possibilities continues to grow!
The play-doh, mats, rollers, scissors and stamps will help me provide these opportunities to my students.
By supporting this project you will be helping create the best possible Play-doh center my pre-kindergarten could possibly have.
This will be a center they will play and learn in.
