Students that attend this school come from various socioeconomic backgrounds. Most of my students have free or reduced lunch. Regardless of their living conditions, my students come to school ready to explore their world. Our classroom is a place to learn, love, and play.
I work with 7 fantastic preschool students with special needs in the heart of Waikiki.
They are creative, energetic, loving, and curious about the world around them. Students at this age learn best by playing, and exploring. To best meet their educational needs, it is important that their classroom environment be filled with many various math and literacy manipulatives for the children to interact with to build on their pre-academic skills.
My Project
The toys and manipulatives I selected will expose my students to early literacy and mathematic concepts, and be fun all at the same time! When my students think something is a "game" or is especially fun for them, they are much more engaged in their learning. Additionally, some of the manipulatives will foster the growth of my students' fine motor development, which is something that four of my students are currently working on.
Preschool age is one of the most crucial periods of development for children.
Their brains are like sponges, and soak up everything around them. It is important that the classroom environment be filled with rich toys and manipulatives for children to play with and learn from. When teaching children with special needs, such as autism, it is especially crucial to be able to provide varied and multi-sensory learning activities for them to engage in every single day.
