Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Garage sales, Craig's List, friends...anything I can find to give my students the opportunity to express themselves through play. The magic of a simple farmhouse with simple objects to grasp can do wonders for children with autism and other special needs. Please help us expand our play area!
My students have special needs.
Every child is between 3-5 years old and attends a non-categorical specialized preschool program (autism, cerebral palsy, speech and language impairment, other health impairment). We are a Title I school, and almost everything "play" related in the classroom has been purchased by a teacher. Our students are visual and tactile learners.
My Project
I am requesting playsets (farm, airport, home, school, playground, etc.) to expand language, develop social-emotional skills, foster fine-motor development (hand-eye) and elicit spontaneous interactions for children with special needs. I purchased a Little People track last year and put it in my center. I had students with autism making car sounds, taking turns with peers, and "expanding" play with the assistance of a teacher. I had my student who is in a wheelchair supported at the waist as he placed the cars down the tracks.
The Little People pieces are easier to grasp for children with motor deficits. I was so excited and went on the hunt for more sets. I have to say they are hard to find unless they are newly purchased. I think if we could offer our students more opportunities in this area, we could bring out so much of their capabilities.

I have seen with my own eyes what a simple playset can do for a child that can't walk, a child that can't talk, and a child with social limitations. I know that if we extend our play to include items we may see or experience in our everyday lives, the students will be able to apply what they learn in their environment. I am blessed to do what I do, and I would love to open more doors! Thank you!
