Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students in our school community (grades 9-12) are wonderfully unique. They encompass a variety of backgrounds, beliefs, and ideas all of which help create a diverse learning environment.
Many of our students come from disadvantaged backgrounds and do not have access to the privileges that many teenagers take for granted.
Our students, like all students, deserve learning opportunities and access to information to help them become successful, contributing members of society. Our students are full of passion, energy, and excitement. They take pride in their successes, especially when overcoming obstacles.
My Project
My high school students love their phones! Who doesn't?! But... unfortunately, they easily get distracted by their phones and become disengaged in the classroom. Many students lack the ability to self-regulate and it is difficult for them to go "cold turkey" and focus in class with nothing in their hands. Phone distractions are difficult for teachers to compete with. I need to get creative in the classroom to help combat student disengagement due to phone use! I hope to use the wide-variety of fidgets to connect to the personal preferences of my students. Every student should be able to find a fidget that will act as a phone replacement when needed so students can actively focus on their learning instead of on their phones.
If I can trade students a fidget for a phone then I expect student focus and engagement to increase.
Many students need to do something with their hands because they are so used to having and playing with a phone. I want to use the variety of fidgets to connect to the personal preference of my students. My goal is to keep their hands productively busy so their minds can focus and all students can find their greatest level of success in the classroom. Play with a fidget, not a phone!
