My students are 5 and 6 year olds that are just beginning their education journey! They are excited about starting school and ready to learn. I want to keep that excitement going in our classroom and help them develop a love for learning.
My students come from a small rural county and we are a Title 1 school, meaning that many of my students come from a low income household.
Many begin school already behind in their motor skills, concepts knowledge, language development and social-emotional skills. They need opportunities to learn through playing to help them grow in these areas.
My Project
With the high curriculum demands these days, it is a struggle to make sure that we also keep our students' education developmentally appropriate. What better way is there to do that than to learn through play!
Using the materials I have selected, my students can learn and develop 21st century skills that will help them not only in school but also in their careers!
They will be learning skills such as communication, collaboration, critical thinking and creativity.
I plan to use the building materials that I have selected as part of our morning bins. As students come in our classroom in the morning they will select a bin to work with. Peers will join them in as they work together on their creations. While students are working on collaborating and communicating with one another, it will offer a "soft" start to our day, much like adults who begin their work day with a cup of coffee and catching up with a co-worker. It will help set the tone for our school day!
