When you walk into my Kindergarten classroom, you experience a buzz of excitement for learning. My students come from low-income families where food is scarce, parents work many shifts and are rarely home, and many people are crammed into small living spaces. My students work hard every day to succeed in reading, math, and writing despite hardships they feel at home.
For students who come from poverty, school offers a safe haven where they know they can reach for their dreams and feel successful.
As an A+ Arts Magnet School, I focus on integrating visual arts, music, dance and drama to enrich and deepen my students learning. My classroom is the first place where many students have experiences in academics. Some families have no books or art supplies at home, which drastically impacts students expose to vocabulary and artistic expression. I want to ensure my students have the best resources to propel their learning to new heights. They can achieve so much with your help!
My Project
Kindergarten students are naturally drawn to play and engagement through movement and socialization. Many days my students are asked to sit and listen for too long and I want to change this in my classroom. Play can be structured to incorporate learning objectives while still allowing students the freedom to explore and engage their bodies, voices and imaginations.
Picture learning letters or spelling words as you climb across large stepping stones!
In the beginning of the year, my students will love using the alphabet stones to practice recognizing their letters. But quickly they will be able to say the sound of each letter and find objects that start with those sounds. By the end of the year, we can use the alphabet stones to spell sight words or short vowel words. They will also learn that moving their bodies and staying fit helps them in and out of school. Students will be learning without knowing as they engage in meaningful play!
