This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are curious, confident, and creative. STEM literacy is a skill that can be harnessed early in their education. A classroom that supports the discovery of basic STEM principles will lay a strong foundation for STEM learning that will lead to future success in school and beyond!
These eager learners are proud members of the first authorized IB-PYP learning community in our area!
Our school is also a Title I school in an urban district where many of our students qualify to receive free or reduced-cost lunch. These kindergarteners have a love for learning that needs to be nurtured early on so that they can continue to find success as they become exemplary world citizens.
My Project
Children learn best through self-directed, inquiry-based learning opportunities. Keva Planks may appear to be simple wooden blocks at first glance, but their perfect proportions allow students to discover concepts beyond what's expected of them from the state standards and kindergarten norms.
When students create structures with these planks, they are exploring concepts related to physics. This gives them opportunities to discuss rich science vocabulary that they'll experience in the upper grades.
These planks will be used to solve problems and create challenges. They are perfect for use in cooperative groups and will push the students to work on communication skills as they explain their ideas and strategies for building with one another.
In addition to the many ways we can utilize these planks in whole-group activities, my students will have opportunities to learn through discovery as they use Keva Planks daily during their "Exploration-Station" centers!
I know that access to these wonderful materials will help stretch the minds of these students, who are always looking for more challenges.
The hands-on nature of working with these planks will create teachable moments that will keep students engaged while opening their eyes to their own limitless potential.
