My students need a variety of play therapy approved toys (a fold-and-go playhouse, happy kids hand puppets, therapeutic bop bags, and kid musical instruments) that aim at allowing children to express their needs symbolically.
I am an elementary school counselor in Union County, NC. As part of my comprehensive school counseling program I plan to implement play therapy into my counseling services with my students.
I work at a Title I, rural, elementary school, where over 70% of the students are from low-income families and thus in large need of social-emotional support.
Through play therapy, children learn to communicate with others, express feelings, modify behavior, develop problem-solving skills, and learn a variety of ways of relating to others. Play provides a safe psychological distance from their problems and allows expression of thoughts and feelings appropriate to their development.
These materials will help facilitate all the wonderful outcomes and experiences that come from play therapy. These toys will allow children to express their needs symbolically while providing the opportunity to develop self-control, insight, and self-understanding! While children play with these materials they work through some themes that are troublesome and give them the safe space that they may be in need of.
Your donation of new play therapy toys and materials will provide high-risk children the opportunity to express themselves in a safe environment that aims at helping children grow through their exploring of themselves and others.
The following resources that I have picked out for this project each represent a specific categories of Play Therapy.
Real-life/Nurturing toys: Baby dolls, dollhouse, puppets, etc.
Aggressive toys: aggressive puppet, handcuffs, bop bag, etc.
Creative toys: dress-up clothes, music instruments, etc.
Thank you for supporting the emotional growth of these wonderful children!
