Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work in an urban school setting that serves a diverse population of students. Half of the student population is bilingual and 100% of the students receives free or reduced lunch. Since our school services a very high population of economically disadvantaged families who face many unique challenges, the staff at the school partner with families to not only support students academic needs but social and emotional as well.
My students love to learn and look forward to coming to school every day.
They love to role play and interact with their peers.
My students range in grades from kindergarten to 2nd grade and have varying disabilities. They have poor self-regulation skills and are very impulsive. My students would benefit from social-emotional learning opportunities.
My Project
My students need a dramatic play area in the classroom. Dramatic play in the classroom is essential for young learners. Students benefit from imaginary play because it allows them to express their emotions and feelings. It also allows many academic opportunities. This will allow them to learn and practice empathy, social skills, and storytelling. The use of the kitchen set and career costumes will allow for authentic experiences during play.
This area will provide purposeful play that will incorporate all subjects.
My students will learn to better cooperate with each other as a result of the dramatic play area. The dramatic play area will enrich the lives of my students for many years to come.
