This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach students with disabilities in the 4th and 5th grade in an urban elementary school in central NJ. I teach in a self contained classroom for students with behavioral disabilities stemming from emotional disturbances. My students need explicit instruction to learn self regulation to be present for learning.
I need materials in order to be culturally responsive and trauma informed while creating the highly motivating educational experiences my students need.
Many of my students present with diagnoses like Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and Oppositional Defiance Disorder. Despite these disabilities and in addition to the high crime and impoverished neighborhood, they are ready and able to learn!
My Project
Please help me give my students tools to develop financial literacy, while increasing math and interpersonal skills. My students are motivated to play with simulated bills and coins. I would like to use this motivation to introduce a fun and functional math project to create a "store". Students will develop products, advertise, and eventually "sell" items in their "stores". The cash register and sign will make this more authentic and exciting.
This introduction to economics and entrepreneurship will motivate my students to get excited about math!
The games and activities I selected will give them practice in functional mathematics and interpersonal social skills.
