My students need basketballs and all the accessories to make our girls basketball team successful! Our school doesn't have the budget (and most of our players' families don't have the means) to outfit a basketball team!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are a small public middle school serving roughly 370 students in our neighborhood of Oakland, CA. We are a small school by design, serving families within the community as well as students from throughout Oakland. The student body is about 87 percent Latino, and 56 percent of our students are English Learners. In addition, 90 percent of students qualify for free and reduced-price lunch and seven percent of our students are identified as needing special education services.
Our school culture is unique because it's very positive, encouraging, and uplifting.
My Project
This is our school's third year with a girls basketball team! To see girls from all different backgrounds get to be part of a team certainly has its magical moments.
From a Congolese refugee student to Muslim Yemeni students to Central American Bilingual Immigrant students - for many of whom it's their first time playing basketball on a team - to American students who have grown up playing basketball... our team is an amazingly diverse learning experience for most girls.
It is a place where we learn discipline, responsibility, teamwork, leadership, and how to win as well as lose.
We need supplies in order to make our team as successful as it can be! Many of our families can't afford accessories for their child to be on the team - things even as simple as hair rubber bands for Saturday morning games! Our school doesn't even have a budget for uniforms or buses - so this is truly a bottom up effort. Any help IS appreciated - by me AND the girls!
