When I think of our school, the two words come to mind are diversity and community. Our school has students from many varying backgrounds. In my class alone I had students from places like Russia, China, and Sierra Leone. What is special about our school is that our differences only serve to strengthen our community and character. At our school we are RESPECTFUL, RESPONSIBLE LEARNERS and it is evident to anyone who walks through our doors and meets our students and staff.
My Project
Kindergarten has changed tremendously in the last few decades. With the many changes it is critical to not neglect the need for play and hands on learning experiences.
I am requesting many different materials that will enhance the learning in my classroom and engage students.
For example, I have requested play-dough letter stamps. Students can practice building words and learning letter sounds, develop their fine motor skills, and have the sensory experience that play-dough provides. I have also requested a butterfly house for students to be able to observe butterflies in the classroom as we learn about growing and changing and living things. Students can engage in dramatic play while learning about community helpers with a new set of puppets.
Not only are these activities engaging and connected to learning, but they also allow students to interact with one another and develop social skills. They can talk about the words they are building as they work at the play dough center. They will be able to discuss their observations and predictions about caterpillars and butterflies. They will be able to imagine themselves in the roles of different community helpers and create dialogue between the different puppets.
Children have a right to have many different, hands-on learning experiences. I thank you for taking the time to consider donating to my project and giving my students more opportunities to engage in learning.
