I teach an eager and active group of nineteen Kindergarten students in Chicago. Our school is located in the Englewood area where 99% of the students receive free lunch. I would like for my students to have more exposure to listening, singing, playing and moving to developmentally appropriate music for their interest level. Singing songs will increase each student's auditory memory span, build his/her vocabulary and give deeper intellectual and emotional concepts to word meanings. Listening, singing, dancing and playing rhythm instruments to age appropriate music will enable my students to increase auditory acuity, develop better listening habits and concentration. Daily musical activities will make it possible for my students to become more proficient at using correct pronunciation, good enunciation and proper phrasing. In addition, music will be used to interrelate and enrich language arts, social studies, math, science and other disciplines. Finally, the funding of this proposal will help my students improve social skills, build their self-esteem, allow them to gather information about the world and their place in it.
