My Students

Oh, my kiddos!! I teach in a rural, one-school school district in Northern California, surrounded by rice fields. My students are a mixture of locals, as well as students who travel from out-of-the-district to attend a country school. I'm lucky to teach siblings, cousins, newbies, and occasionally a child of a former student. Because we are so small, my classroom is a combination of Transitional Kindergarten and Kindergarten students; it's a big age-range! About 25% are English-learners, 50% are farm kids, 100% are treasured!

My Project

Kindergarten has changed since we attended! By year's end my students will read, write full sentences, and decompose numbers. But even though education has changed, children's social development needs haven't. They still need to play, pretend, imagine, create, negotiate, and compromise. Dramatic play (and a good kitchen/play area) can foster all of these!

Sadly, with today's increased availability of tablets and smart phones, I've also noticed a decrease in my students' language, number sense, and social skills.

However, I'm lucky enough to teach at a school that still honors these very important life-skills; I would love some equipment to help out with it..already imagining a cookie shop, pizza parlor, ice cream parlor, farmers market ...
