Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Play that links sensorimotor, cognitive, and social-emotional experiences together provides an ideal setting for brain development..." Doris Bergen, Educational Psychologist
Students that attend our elementary school come from a variety of different socio-economic backgrounds with over 80% of them receiving free and reduced lunch.
Our school strives to raise student achievement and engage the community by planning and providing various before and after school programs. Despite many obstacles, our students are eager to learn and do their best. They come to school knowing that they are valued here and can be successful.
My Project
The wide open space provided by our primary play yard provides the perfect stage for rich play experiences. Play, and more specifically team or group oriented play, allows students to learn more about themselves and practice how to interact with others. Students learn how to cheer each other on in a positive manner as friends are challenged to move the soccer balls across a coned obstacle course. They develop perseverance, manage success and defeat, as they try to get the ball into the circle-shot starter hoop. Children chant rhymes by memory as they jump together using the nylon long jump rope or sing and dance together with educational movement songs played on the multimedia player. All these experiences develops moral character; learning how to be a friend, recognize friendly and unfriendly behavior and how to tell the difference.
“We are never more fully alive, more completely ourselves, or more deeply engrossed in anything than when we are playing.” - Charles Schaefer.
Unfortunately, what is missing in this picture is the equipment to facilitate such experiences. The play equipment being requested for this project naturally promote team-oriented play scenarios. The equipment will be used with the goal of providing students the opportunity to positively engage with each and build higher social emotional skills - ultimately leading them on the road to success.
