This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

I teach/coach in rural southwest Georgia. I teach 6th grade mathematics full of wonderful kids. I coach middle and high school baseball. They show up every day and work hard to get better in each sport they play. Most of them play multiple sports, which keeps them involved in after school activities year-round.

The kids are full of enthusiasm about the game of baseball and want our program to grow successfully.

Most of them have never played the game until they get to middle school, so we have a lot of beginners. They consistently compete against each other to sharpen their skills. They are a very athletic group of kids. Excelling tremendously in football and basketball programs. With baseball not being a priority in this community, the resources haven't been there to give them the foundation they need to have high success levels. With their interest and my knowledge, they will continue to compete and grow.

My Project

Our practice baseballs are very old and rugged and our catcher's gear is nearly becoming un-useable. We have a very small budget that covers our bare minimums to operate, which leaves us very little to cover new equipment expenses. Most of our practice baseballs have the covers ripped off or split. We have one set of catcher's gear for our middle school team that is in working condition, but our high school set is cracked on the helmet and the straps on our shin guards are broken. As of right now, we are having to share sets between two teams.
