My Students
My students are energetic and eager to learn; they just need more opportunities! I have a TK/K class with students ranging in age from four to six years old. I teach in a Title One, high poverty school where every student receives free breakfast and lunch. Many students are not living with parents, are affected by gang and drug violence and sometimes, don't have their basic needs met.
Despite experiencing things that are negative in their young lives, they come to school with a smile and ready to learn.
Over half of my class are English learners. My students show me everyday that despite where they come from, there is no limit to what they can achieve with the right opportunities.
Most of my students did not attend preschool and are not in home environments that provide things like paints, crayons and clay. In fact, many of my students touch a pencil for the first time in our class. I would love a place for my students to create, use their imaginations and be exposed to different types of materials.
My Project
My students love to be active but have extremely limited resources as far as sports. Due to low socioeconomic status, only a few of our students ever get the opportunity to participate in organized team sports. Our PE program in schools does not start for students until fourth grade. Primary teachers are responsible for PE with their own classes.
Your donation would provide the tools for younger students to work together, get outside and learn the basics of baseball and track and field events.
Our students think that soda and hot Cheetos is a balanced meal and spend plenty of time on the couch.
My students are very lacking in motor skills. Daily, I witness students trying to throw a ball with two hands, flinching and not knowing how to catch even a large foam ball. Many don’t even have the coordination to run or go up and down stairs correctly. My students are largely in single parent households that are struggling to get by. They don’t have a dad to play catch with or take them to team sports. I would love to be able to work on these skills with them and create our own PE time with the tools to improve in these areas.
