Each library visit begins with a story. Children ages 5 to 11 gather round me as we dive into magical kingdoms, rage at injustice and rise up with the brave. Fiction, non-fiction, all stories ignite the imagination that lights the way to knowledge. As a Title I school, my students come from diverse multi-cultural backgrounds and learning levels. They are energetic, creative and eager to learn --whether they speak English, Spanish or Bengali! They are anxious to read "hard" books, and need the tools to improve their immerging reading skills.
My students are finding their place in the world, and learning to read helps them make informed decisions, be better citizens, and kinder world neighbors.
The library is a place where they can see other worlds and other cultures, as well as themselves and what they can become. Funding this project will help an entire school of children, K-5 grades, have books they are excited to read, and as they read, become better readers, laying a foundation for success in school and beyond.
Early chapter books give confidence to emerging readers, especially students who are reading below grade level. Having a chapter book instead of picture books designed for young children gives older kids social confidence while giving them the tools they need for success.
These new short chapter books and graphic novels will propel emerging readers into confident readers-- bridging the gap between when learning to read is hard and when it becomes fun.
Our K-5 library services readers of all abilities, from English language learners to well advanced readers. Books open the world for children whose world is limited and challenging. Library books can be taken home when in-person school is limited, helping kids stay on track academically. If we make reading fun and relevant, children will thrive--at home and at school.
