Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students really enjoy doing engaging hands-on activities. We take care of our school garden and my students really enjoy the farming part of the class. Our students are really excited that they get to grow their own produce for the cafeteria. I have noticed that when students grow their own vegetables they are more likely to eat them. Our students want to know more about healthy and clean eating. Not only do we focus on traditional soil gardening but we also experiment with other forms of growing such as aquaponics and hydroponics.
My Project
These materials will allow my students to continue to seed plants for not only our learning garden and farm but we also provide starts for other high schools. Students will build these hydroponic systems and grow crops for our kitchen to use in our cafeteria every day. Specifically the General Hydroponics system will be used to grow tomatoes year round in our greenhouse for our cafeteria. Our goal is to supply the kitchen with enough romaine lettuce that they no longer have to order from an outside company. The two PVC hydroponic systems will help achieve this goal. Students will also study the effects of growing hydroponically vs soil vs aquaponically. This is going to bring great opportunities for my students. The Camera is going to allow the students to capture the work as it is being done. Students will use the Blue Yeti microphone to record videos talking about the farm and their projects.
