Our school is a public high school located in Wilson, North Carolina that offers mostly first generation college students and at-risk students an opportunity to graduate with both a high school diploma and an associate's degree with no out of pocket expenses in four or five years.
This school has been an immense success with most students graduating and going on to a four-year university. Our Science department has big ideas and very little funding available. Students lead funded projects to support scientific investigations into areas of interest so that they can learn as big as they can dream!
Our goal is to teach students about genetics, plant life cycle, inheritance, and environmental stewardship. The students will develop/improve their teamwork skills which will prepare them for college and their future career. With project students will also be able to develop/improve how they analyze data, and how they observe the plants.
In Their Own Words
I want to make biology class more exciting. This project is meant to light up the spark within my peers and make them want to learn about genetics. It might inspire them to become biologists. The cure for genetic diseases/disorders are waiting to be found, but we can't do it without the inspiration.
We will be directing/leading the project by ourselves. We will take the initiative to set up the kits and finish them with only the students leading. This will help us develop and improve some of our skills needed to succeed. We know the big responsibility to take leadership and we accept that.
Our school would appreciate the genetic kits to learn more about genetics and biology. Since our school is still new we don't that many materials to provide a hands-on experience. This kit will allow us to have hands-on activities which will benefit some of my peers that are kinetic learners, and make biology class more fun. It might inspire some to pursue a career in biology.
