Help me give my students a way to explore the importance of nature in our lives, provide shade and a healthy atmosphere on our school campus, and give back to our community for generations to come.
My students are energetic 8 and 9 year-olds. They are curious and come into the classroom with an excitement for learning and friendship. My main goal is to incorporate whole body, mind, and emotional health into my classroom by implementing practices such as Morning Meeting, time for games and collaboration, and ways to connect to the environment. I hope to build community and emotional health among my kiddos.
I would like to plan a project that will give students a sense of ownership for our school campus as well as an understanding of the importance and impact of caring for nature.
My Project
Students will begin with research on trees and the benefits that come from them. They will use the trowels to learn about the type of soil we have on campus, research the zone we live in, the best types of trees for our area and the ways to care for them. We will discuss ways to raise money for attaining trees from the Arbor Day Foundation Nursery and set goals for how many we would like to plant. After acquiring our trees, the shovels, hose, and fertilizer will help us to get our trees in the ground and care for them throughout the school year.
