Experiencing high school can evoke every emotion: fear or joy, angst or optimism, and sometimes all of these at once! Our classroom is a great place to begin learning about the outside world and how to be the best person possible in it. Each student is unique, from young athletes and artists to students with individual learning plans and young leaders. We're the fourth most diverse high school in the nation, and it shows in my classes!
My students are immersed in a journey that will culminate in college, leadership, citizenship, and life.
I want to prepare them to be the best readers they can possibly be, the kindest friends they wish they had, and heroes that their families and friends can be proud to know. High school can be difficult, but this is our chance to start on the right path. We hope to start the fall fully stocked and ready to take on the world!
My Project
I want to support all the students in my Sci-fi class. It is so much fun to geek out about alternate worlds and imagine what society will be like in ten, twenty, or thirty years. I also welcome all students into my class -- English learners, students with special learning needs, and students taking the class as an elective.Graphic novels bridge the gap between preparing for college and learning to read: they are books we can all read and enjoy.
This year has been devastating in so many ways.
Books like this one are an "extra" even though they are often students' favorites. When we left school in March, students took their books home. I am glad the books are in the community, but my new students will need special novels to read this year as well. We need to replace what is gone and start this year ready to support a new group of wonderful students.
