As a special education teacher often times students respond: "I forgot my assignment!" "I did not know there was a test!" Organizing is an important skill to develop, and students with special needs often struggle with organization. Planners can be used as an effective tool.
I am a middle school teacher of record and I have a case load of approximately thirty three students.
I have students with various disabilities such as: specific learning disability (SLD), emotional disability (ED), other health impairment (OHI), etc. The population of our school is approximately 80% Caucasian, and the rest is a mix of African American and Hispanic students. My students come from a low middle class and low income families. They are students who struggle academically, they need a lot of academic support, and usually perform below grade level.
My Project
Organization is a skill that needs to be taught, it is not inherited, and often times we learn how to organize from mimicking our parents, teachers, or someone we relate to. However, most kids with learning disorders struggle with organizational skills and are unable to organize their belongings, organize class assignments, prioritize their actions, or allot their time efficiently and meet deadlines. Therefore, I would like to give each student in my caseload a daily planner. I will assign a date of the week to meet with a group of 6 or 7 students after school and go over an organizational skill and help them use their student planner efficiently. I will use this time to check their planners, and make sure their are doing their part.
Organization is an important process that needs to be developed in order to live a prosperous life.
We all need organization in our lives. For instance, one needs to know that the rent payment is due the first of every month, and one needs to be able to plan, and manage our money in order to make the rent payment on time. My hope is to start developing good habits in my students in the classroom and outside the classroom.
