Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 23 Gifted and Talented students in grades 2nd through 6th and also provide enrichment to about 17-22 students in the same grade levels. Every day students enter in the classroom with a bounce in their step, ready to engage in our lesson for the day. We work hard to maintain a classroom community where we help and support each other. I also pull enrichment groups averaging about 6-12 students per group.
In our class we make mistakes, take risks, and engage in activities that require students to use their brains and hands.
My students are full of heart, ideas, energy and questions! We value each other's thoughts and ideas while working on cooperative and independent projects. Students take ownership of their learning by driving our instruction with project based learning. I am the facilitator, while they take the lead.
We have so much fun in our classroom that the only complaints I have are when they have to leave.
My Project
Technology has many great uses inside and outside the classroom and will always be a valued learning tool. My students have technology learning opportunities embedded in their daily lives, however what I've noticed is a lack of hands-on building and creating skills. Students don't know how to build things as simple as a tower made of cards, opportunities to use their hands and creativity are limited in the classroom.
I want to bring out the tiny engineer and architect in every student!
With the use of material such as 6x6 boxes, duct tape, marbles, markers and brass fasteners; I can allow students greater creative freedom. These items will extend their choice of materials beyond basic construction paper and scotch tape.
With your help I hope to introduce projects such as box car races, marble tower runs, marble mazes, escape rooms and so much more.
