My Students

My seventh grade English Language Arts students are wonderful. They are kind, thoughtful, and for the most part, love to read. They are mostly from Queens. My school is a Title I school, which means that a large percentage of our students come from low-income households.

My students benefit from having small notebooks they can use as planners to keep them organized.

My students struggle with organization and often do not have planners to keep track of homework, projects and upcoming tests.

My Project

I teach 7th grade ELA and on Day 1 after giving my speech about how organization is the key to success, I ask them to take out their planners and then, year in and year out, I sit back and watch as 95% of them look at me confused. In 6th grade, the school supplies planners, but they do not in 7th grade, so students do not come prepared. In addition, because my school is a Title I school, many students cannot afford many of their school supplies, so they spend the year without a planner.

By providing my students with a small basic notebook to keep track of their work, I am helping set them up for organizational success.

They can use these small notebooks to take note of upcoming homework, projects, tests and other important information. 7th grade is a difficult time for students as the workload really begins to increase, and I do not want my students struggle with keeping up with all the information and dates thrown at them. These notebooks will be essential to keeping them on track.
