Our school is a Title 1 school where 100% of our students receive free and reduced lunch. My class is a child development, head start blend. There are children from different cultures and backgrounds.
For most of my students, school is the only stability that they have.
Students come in exhausted, hungry, and with behavior problems due to circumstances at home.
I love my class with my whole heart and by their warm smiles and big hugs I can tell they love school too! I want to build the most productive, stimulating, safe, and loving environment I can for them while they are here.
My Project
Environmental print, working letters, and reading books each day has a significant effect on not only how fast children absorb literacy skills, but also improves their test scores dramatically. I want to be able to provide my students with a fun and effective way to construct ideas of foundation literacy.
Lots of the children in my class do not have parental support at home.
They are not read to, they do not see environmental print in their homes (or are talked to about it outside their homes) and do not have the opportunity to write or draw at home. This makes it very difficult to teach phonics, print awareness, as well as writing skills.
I want to provide them with fun learning centers that students can facilitate on their own in order to play with letters and letter sounds in a stimulating environment.
