My first-grade classroom is part of a unique full-inclusion program in our school district. Children with disabilities learn alongside their typically developing peers, and I design my learning and teaching around the diverse needs that are presented by my students. Utilizing the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL), I strive to provide multiple means by which my students can engage and express how they learn.
One way to engage my students is by having technology available for all students throughout the whole day.
This will allow me to pique their interest in the world around them and possibly plant a seed into their future plans.
I am lucky to have Hindi, Arabic, Urdu, Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese, Tamil, and Farsi to name a few of the languages that my students speak in their homes. In addition to being from very diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds, they also vary greatly in the way they learn.
My Project
When my students show up we spend too much time hanging backpacks and jackets. If I can have a better option for hanging their backpacks, we will transition faster in the morning and in the afternoon for packing up.
Teaching them that everything has a place will help instill the organization skills they will need to be successful in their future.
The mobility of the cart will open up the back of my room and keep the floor clear of backpacks, jackets, and lunchboxes. I will now be able to take that area and hold centers and move furniture in the class.
