My students are citizens of a beautiful city that prides itself on its sense of compassion and community. My school is nestled right on the edge of Houston and serves many families in the surrounding neighborhoods. We value family, community, and perseverance.
Our school district services students that speak above 900 different dialects across the entire student body (yes, 900!), yet we are unified in our goal as a community to grow further than we have ever done so before.
Our school was completely flooded during Hurricane Harvey, and we are finally on the up and up with a refreshed building and renewed intention to succeed. We look forward to taking strides and making lasting changes in the world with your help!
My Project
Due to the Hurricane Harvey and the damage and complete devastation it brought, lots of beautiful new floors were put in during construction... however, there is no carpet to sit on. Students sit on the hard floor during instruction and find it not only uncomfortable, but also distracting to sit on. Not only is the discomfort distracting, students have no sense of boundaries and personal space during instruction making it harder for them to learn respect for their peers.
Having a rug in the classroom will allow students to sit comfortably and responsibly so that they can learn most effectively.
Students will use the sectioned rug to sit in one square, clearly identifying their boundaries and learning how to respect the boundaries of others. This rug also promotes positive partner talk, which is amplified by the sectioning naturally incorporated in this rug. We are getting ready to start a new school year, and we look forward to having this rug in our room to do our best learning. Thank you for your support!
